KEBAB TRIVIA

The Doner Kebab has become one of the world’s most popular fast food dishes. It’s a much healthier alternative the regular fast food joints as vertical roasting ensures that the fat drips away while locking in moist juices. ‘Kebab’ basically means a dish of pieces of meat roasted or grilled on a skewer or spit.

Doner kebab ~ the word ‘doner‘  is derived from the Turkish word “dondurmek” which means to rotate. Put together, ‘doner kebab‘ refers to ‘rotating meat‘ – on a vertical spit It is also known by different names in different cultures and countries. The more common names you might have come across are the Shawarma (Arabic) and the Gyros (Greek). The Doner Kebab as we know it – the vertical spit – was conceived of in Turkey around the mid 19th century . The meat was traditionally served with rice until the 1970s when a Turkish immigrant in Germany, popularized the takeaway kebab i.e serving the meat with pita or flat bread. This allowed busy city customers or to eat on the go.

keeping-it-real

In recent times, the meat for the doner  in most shops around the world is often industrially processed from compressed ground meat containing a mixture of different meat kinds from various animals, making the specific contents less traceable. At EPIKebabs, we keep to the original method of preparing doner, by using 100% fresh chicken and beef meat rather than variable processed meat compounds. This way we ensure a best quality healthy meal and a great taste.
